Causes of Ovarian Cysts

There are many different causes of ovarian cysts. During the normal menstrual cycle the ovaries grow cyst like structures, called follicles each month. These follicles produce hormones necessary for pregnancy such as estrogen and progesterone. If the follicles continue growing for an abnormal period of time, this is when an ovarian cyst can form.
Follicular cysts are the most common type of ovarian cysts. They hardly ever produce any symptoms, are usually harmless and go away on their own.

During the menstrual cycle, there is a luteinizing hormone surge when an egg is about to be released and this is the frequent cause when an ovarian cyst may occur. Each time an egg is released, estrogen and progesterone are created by the ruptured follicle to prepare for possible conception. When the egg is sealed off, fluid accumulates inside the follicle and becomes what is called a corpus luteum. The corpus luteum will then expand and at that point becomes a cyst.

A Corpus Luteum cyst usually will disappear without any treatment in a few weeks. Although in just a few weeks time, it can grow quite quickly and increase in size to up to 4 inches in diameter. When a cyst becomes this large, severe there will be pelvic and abdominal pain. There is also a potential that the cyst can rupture or cause hemorrhaging and twisting of the ovary. If the cyst ruptures, it will cause very severe pain and internal bleeding.

The drug clomiphene citrate is a fertility drug that works to induce ovulation, and might in itself, be among the causes of ovarian cysts. Clomiphene citrate is in fact known to increase the risk of developing a corpus luteum cyst (which does not prevent or threaten pregnancy), and therefore probably causes other cysts as well.

Though it is not possible to completely prevent the causes of ovarian cysts, increasing exercise, controlling stress, improving the quality of your diet, and improving your health can help minimize the probability of the development of an ovarian cyst.
